Setting up your first blog warnings
blogging 7 CommentsWould you like to know how not to do well blogging?
Okay here it is:
Start a brand new blog and fill it with ads.
I’m writing this because I’ve seen so many new blogs that are filled with ads and zero value.
People contact me often to look at their blogs and I’m shocked to see what they’ve built.
It’s as if they’ve drank the Internet Marketing cool-aid labeled “start a blog, fill it with ads and sit on the beach while millions roll in”.
In doing the above, Google will hate you, any traffic you get to your blog will laugh and you’ll become even more frustrated with blogging.
Please, if you’ve fell into the above trap, just stop it and listen to the following for a second…
You get what you give.
Want people clicking on your ads, telling others about your blog, getting back links without asking, people joining your list?
It’s simple, give them some value.
What kind of value? Well it depends on your niche.
If your niche is about entertainment, entertain the hell out of them. Make them laugh until milk pours out from their nose.
Your ads on your blog are like “by the way, check this out” not ” hey, Click here because I have nothing else for you”.
If you want to have a blog full of ads and no content go for it but here’s what’s going to happen,
1. You’ll constantly have to be looking for new traffic.
2. Your site will not be sticky. (Sticky meaning people stay a long time. The longer they stay the better chances you have of some ads getting clicked on.)
3. Google will label you as a THIN site/blog. I can’t prove this but your ranking in Google will.
4. Zero user generated traffic. This means, no one will tell others about your blog other than to laugh at it.
Please come to the table with some value and you may just get a lot of the following:
1. People freely tell others about your blog thus generating loads of new traffic/leads.
2. Become an authority in your niche which can be leveraged into all kinds of opportunities.
3. Sell your own products and services without begging or asking for a sympathy sale.
4. Have a lot more fun knowing what you publish is adding to someone’s life in a positive way.
Thanks for reading and good luck with your value creation.

Hi Craig,
I was reading this 10 Unconventional But Successful Online Homebusiness Ideas today and I immediately thought about your post here about not turning the internet into a virtual landfill. There are lots of fun ways to provide value and make a great income.
Thanks for the comment Marc. I loved the article you posted above.
I hate it when I click on a blog and it’s all ads! Seriously, there’s just not passion anymore.
I’m looking to start a blog that will generate user traffic. I’m intent on posting good content, but what other ways can I attract people to read my blog? Other than good content?
I have read your book about a Word Press Blog and also about Blog LockDown. I did not even realize I needed to protect my blog. Thank you for the information and thank you also for making this so that people with no “techie-training” can follow, too. It means a great deal!

Craig,
Thank you for the great solid advice, full of common sense.
It seems that everywhere I look, there are marketers trying to teach you how to automate this, automate that, don’t write a single word yourself, just push this button and all the content will be spun or generated for you, so you can just sit back and relax and rake in piles of cash.
While there are definitely advantages of automating certain parts of the process, I’ve always wondered: how are ‘normal people’ supposed to like… or even read all this stuff?
Your blog is a breath of fresh air and is on top of my list of bookmarked sites/blogs that I actually LIKE to read and look forward to.
