If things go wrong and they will

Do not do anything! Instead, sit back and think, “What was the last thing I did?” Did you install a plugin? Change a category name on your blog?

If you just think for a moment, it’s better than jumping into your blog’s admin and changing stuff at random which in most cases, just makes things worst for you.

Most of the time when issues hit your blog, it’s because of a plugin. You recently added a plugin that just does not get along with the Wordpress version you’re using. Easy, fix: disable the plugin and find another that will work.

Also, some plugins don’t work well with the blog theme you’re using. If that’s the case, find another theme or similar plugin.

Case in point: While testing a new theme I created yesterday I noticed the strangest thing happening to the design. After an hour and a few skype calls to some Wordpress guru’s I found the issue… A plugin I was using was the issue. Disabled the plugin and the theme looked great!

I suggest to use the bare minimum amount of plugins because when you update your blog, chances are you’ll have to update all your plugins (If there are any updates available.)

Last tip: Don’t hesitate to reach out to someone that knows more about you when it comes to blogs. Since being online, I noticed women are more open to asking for help than men. Men seem to feel if they can’t fix it, no one can or something like that. Don’t bother, just ask for help… Even if it’s just help on how to start your first blog.

Craig I fixed it! I’m so happy to get things going – you won’t believe it but
one little slash did the trick – I guess you might believe it if you do coding…

I’m posting this here so someone else might benefit: so the problem was that
1. the post titles in the “recent posts” and the post titles themselves were sent to a HTTP404 which meant the exerpt wasn’t expanding, and the posts couldn’t even be
read…

2. the category titles in the sidebar were lining up the posts they connected to but
not expanding them…

I went to the WP forum and found a recent post about category problems after
upgrading from 2.7 to 2.7.1 – one answer suggested to check the permalink, so
I checked the permalink in my blog and…ta da…

the custom /%category%/%postname%.php that I inserted yesterday following
Craig’s excellent guide was missing the / between the 2 % in the middle, my
mistake… my excuse being that the font is very small in that WP line.

That missing little slash kept everything frozen in place… I’m amazed!

I can go back to posting now

Fran
PS. I just posted this under your article: “Research First Please” and then
was led to this post by the link in my yahoo mail, so I did a copy and paste because
my experience fits with what your saying: ask or go look for help!

Fran :)
